Lieutenant Commander Tom Paoletti, leader of SEAL Team 16, is nervous about a presidential visit to the based in San Diego but he does not have authority or a specific reason to stop the president from coming. Mike Muldoon is charged with helping Joan DaCosta, a White House staffer whose job to make sure that everything goes smoothly for the presidential visit. Although Mike takes one look at Joan and falls for her, she is horrified to consider a relationship with a man seven years younger than she is. The second story line involves Joan's grandparents and their experiences during WWII. The third story involves Sam Starrett and his wife, Mary Lou, a woman who got pregnant with the idea of forcing Sam to marry her. This has lead to a very unhappy marriage, and Mary Lou is struggling to keep it together. Since Sam ignores her and spends very little time at home, she has gotten a job at McDonald's, she has met a Middle-Eastern neighbor, a gentle gardener, and both Mary Lou and the neighbor have gotten mixed up in a terrorist plot to kill the president.
