The Role of China Green Metal Certification Center

The China Green Metal Certification Center (CGMC) stands at the forefront of this movement, aiming to certify around 2.75 million metric tons of low-carbon aluminium by year-end. This ambitious initiative is set to expand, with a projection of certifying 4 million metric tons by 2024.

Meeting International Demand for Sustainability

The shift towards green aluminium is not only a domestic affair but is also driven by an increasing international demand for sustainable supply chains. Major brands like Apple, Audi, and BMW are actively seeking materials with reduced emissions, thus endorsing China’s green aluminium.

The Certification Process and Corporate Uptake

CGMC’s certification process, which currently encompasses an additional 500,000 metric tons, is met with enthusiasm from companies eager to align with green standards. So far, 28 companies have achieved certification, signaling a robust industry response.

Pioneers of Green Aluminium

Industry giants such as Chalco’s Qinghai unit and Henan Zhongfu Industrial have already obtained CGMC verification, showcasing their commitment to renewable energy sources like hydro, wind, or solar power in aluminium production.

The Economics of Going Green

Although green-certified aluminium fetches a higher price in Europe, Chinese manufacturers have not yet capitalized on certification for price hikes. The nominal cost of certification is dwarfed by the current market value, highlighting the economic viability of green aluminium.

Reducing Carbon Footprints

In stark contrast to the 14 tons of CO2 emissions from coal-powered electricity, renewable energy production can reduce emissions to below 2 tons per metric ton of aluminium, illustrating the profound environmental benefits of green production.

Future Outlook and Demand

With the upcoming EU’s CBAM set to be operational by 2026, the demand for green-certified aluminium is anticipated to surge. Domestic demand in China, alongside international demand, is expected to more than double by 2030, according to Antaike.


China’s green aluminium initiative not only exemplifies environmental stewardship but also positions the nation as an industrial leader in sustainable practices.
